Culture enriches our lives, while at the same time serving as the focus
of a city's attractions. Making use of Tokyo's diverse cultural resources,
the TMG is actively promoting culture with a view to making the city
a hive of creativity.
Some of the TMG's main cultural projects are outlined below.
Museums, Theaters and Art Galleries
The TMG runs a number of museums, theaters and art galleries to serve
as centers for creating and spreading the city's culture, while
at the same time preserving the historical legacy of Edo-Tokyo. These
include:
Tokyo Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum
Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo Tokyo
Metropolitan Museum of Photography
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Tokyo Bunka Kaikan
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space

Walls
The TMG gives emerging young artists the opportunity to present
their works on the walls of the TMG building and the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Applications are accepted from the general
public once a year, and selected works are exhibited at the Museum
of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. From among these, the winners of the
Tokyo Wonder Wall award are exhibited at the TMG building. |

| Tokyo Wonder
Site
Tokyo Wonder Site is a base for emerging young artists. The TMG
gives its support to exhibitions by young artists, and promotes
cultural events such as concerts, workshops, and lectures with
themes close to the citizens of Tokyo. It also encourages communication
and artistic exchanges among artists, as well as those between
artists and people in other fields. |

Asian Performing
Arts Festival
The Asian Performing Arts Festival is one of the joint projects
of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21 (see this page). It aims
to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange between
major Asian cities. The participating cities (Tokyo, Beijing,
Delhi, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul and Taipei) take turns
to host the festival every year, which features performances from
each of the cities. The program includes not only a variety of
stage and musical performances, but also seminars, workshops and
display booths. The first Asian Performing Arts Festival was hosted
by Tokyo in 2002. |
