Further Expansion of Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport is located in the Japanese capital of Tokyo, where it functions as the hub of a domestic aviation network linking 48 airports nationwide. Haneda was used by approximately 60 million passengers in fiscal 2002 and ranks as Japan's busiest airport.

The airport's capacity has been expanded several times in the past, hand in hand with offshore development projects carried out in the area. However, due to the robust demand for air travel in Japan, Haneda has already reached the limit of its existing capacity, leaving no room for additional flight slots.

This has prompted strong demands for further expansion to increase capacity at Haneda, thereby invigorating the capital area, helping the development of Japan's economic infrastructure and boosting the functionality of cities throughout the country.

The TMG has proposed such an expansion to the Japanese government, which established and administrates Haneda Airport, and has campaigned strongly toward that end. In 2002, the government responded with a Cabinet decision to go ahead with the expansion - to be completed by the end of the current decade - on condition that the financial resources required for the project can be secured.

Bearing in mind the intense demand for air services in the Greater Tokyo Area, the TMG continues to press the national government to implement and complete this expansion project as soon as is feasibly possible.

The Significance of Haneda Airport Expansion

A major expansion of airport capacity will address the increasing demand for domestic air travel in Japan and can also be used to furnish slots for regularly scheduled international flights.

This will translate into improved user convenience by increasing the variety and frequency of air routes, revitalizing the international competitiveness and economy of Tokyo as an urban center and initiating other advances. The effects of these steps will not be limited to Tokyo, but will spread throughout the growing aviation network to reach all corners of Japan.
